Caring for Your Fine Jewellery: Tips to Keep Your Pieces Sparkling for Years

Fine jewellery is made to last generations, but only with proper care. A few simple habits will keep your rings, bracelets, and diamonds looking as brilliant as the day you received them.

Clean your pieces regularly, gently

A soft-bristled brush, warm water, and a drop of mild dish soap is often all you need. Soak your piece for 15 to 20 minutes, gently brush around the setting to release trapped oils and lotion residue, then rinse thoroughly and dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners for pieces with emeralds, opals, or pearls, as these stones are more delicate than diamonds.

Store pieces separately

Diamonds are remarkably hard, hard enough to scratch other jewellery, including other diamonds, if stored carelessly in the same box. Keep each piece in its own soft pouch or a lined compartment to prevent scratches and tangling.

Remove jewellery before physical activity

Rings and bracelets are particularly vulnerable during exercise, gardening, or household chores. Even a durable setting can loosen a stone over time with repeated impact. Make it a habit to remove fine jewellery before activities that involve your hands.

Be mindful of chemicals

Chlorine, in particular, can weaken and discolour gold alloys over time, while household cleaning products and perfumes can dull a stone's brilliance. Put jewellery on last, after applying lotion, perfume, and hairspray, to minimize residue buildup.

Schedule professional inspections

Bring your fine jewellery in for a professional check-up once a year. A jeweller can spot loosening prongs, worn clasps, or early signs of wear long before they become a real problem, often catching issues that would otherwise go unnoticed until a stone is lost.

Canadian winters call for extra care

Cold, dry air can cause skin to shrink slightly, making rings feel looser in winter months. Be especially mindful when removing gloves or mittens, as rings can slip off more easily in colder weather.

Fine jewellery is an investment in both beauty and memory. A little consistent care goes a long way toward ensuring it remains as brilliant decades from now as it is today.
